Case Studies

Evolving Practice logo

Evolving Practice (Link opens in new windowwww.evolvingpractice.org) is the Scottish Health Council's website for recording and sharing case studies, experiences and ideas which have involved people in shaping and influencing local services. It contains real-life examples of Scotland's commitment to improving services by engaging with patients, carers and communities.

Case studies are welcome from across the NHS, local authorities, statutory agencies, voluntary organisations and community groups. Submissions should include reflective evaluation which demonstrates the meaningful involvement of patients, carers and/or members of the public.

The website allows you to record and share your own experience of Patient Focus and Public Involvement while learning from initiatives from around the country. Case studies are available to everyone without the need for a username and password. Setting up a free account allows users to submit their own examples. All submissions to the site are moderated by the Scottish Health Council, and case studies are checked before publication to ensure they are appropriate, accurate and informative.

Cover of Improving Participation report

In March 2010, the Scottish Health Council published a report entitled Improving Participation PDF document which describes twenty projects from across Scotland that have involved patients, carers and communities. These projects were supported by grants from the Scottish Health Council and cover a wide range of engagement activity, including:

  • clinical services, such as cancer, dementia, eating disorders and mental health
  • equalities groups, such as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, older people and black and minority ethnic communities
  • seldom-heard groups, such as homeless people, lone parents, young people and those living in remote and rural areas, and
  • existing networks, including Public Partnership Forums and carer support groups.

Please note: this was a time-limited project. The Scottish Health Council does not currently offer grants to support projects.
